the best training for improving jumping ability is….jumping. either specific to your event or sport,ie. high jumping you do high jumps. once youve perfected your technique(proper mechanics in jumping motion exerts less energy and gives better results) , you want to jump, jump, jump. if vertical leap improvement is your goal, you want to jump(using proper technique) as many times as possible till failure,in sets of 10-30+ just as you would when weight training. but, the hard part about jump training is not cheating yourself. when you train with weights you are lifting a specific weight, the pounds do not change during the set. but, during jump training, you become tired and tend to not jump as high during the set. so, what you do is pick a goal, a height you can reach lets say 80-90% of your current max vertical(or horizontal if long jump, long jump should be done continuously too) then have it marked off and hit that mark every rep!! as you get better, increase the height. jump training takes discipline, and determination..it is very mental. the body can achieve what the mind can believe, cant be any truer then with jump training! another important factor is eye placement. you want to be looking at your goal or above, not below at the time of the jump, you would be amazed at the results of this combined with believing in yourself..once you have somewhat mastered this training or plateaued, you can begin to supplement your training with other exercises. first i would recommend stretching, ecspecially the achilles tendon. the squat with free weights is the best weight traing exercise you can do period(done properly of course). there was a test done by ucla track, that tested their atheletes and suprisingly, their shot putters consistently out performed the teams high jumpers in vertical leap tests(not high jumping). this was attributed to the enormous squat work they did. that would the best weight training exercise to do. one of my favorite exercises for jump or sprint training is box jumps, off and on a box knee high, to mid thigh, to waist or to chest high doing the same reps till failure. shoulders are also very key in jumping ability. they help swing the body up on the final phase of a jump. some weight traing with them would be beneficial. keep your whole body in shape and train hard. you gotta really want it with jump training,as with any training what you put in to it is what youll get out of it………………
