(For instance Jordan Farmar had a standing vertical jump of 33.5″ and a running vertical leap of 42″ – topping the draft camp). It can’t be momentum, because from high school physics a vector going horizontally (the running athlete) won’t add force to the vertical vector of the jump and increase it’s height.

Yet we all know that people can jump higher, often significantly, with a run up. Why is this the case?
